Penn State College of Medicine
Biography
Smit Brahmbhatt is a second-year medical student at Penn State College of Medicine and the institution’s inaugural Orthopaedic Surgery Research Liaison, a role established to expand access to orthopaedic research for students regardless of prior research experience. In this capacity, he has built a structured research program that trains students in large-scale database research and clinical outcomes methodology, connects them with resident and faculty mentors, and guides projects from initial concept through abstract submission, presentation, and publication using standardized workflows. To date, the program has engaged more than 20 medical students, residents, and faculty in active collaboration, supporting research across shoulder and elbow surgery, adult reconstruction, sports medicine, pediatric orthopaedics, and trauma. His own work focuses on surgical outcomes, healthcare utilization, and disparities in musculoskeletal care. He works to foster an inclusive, collaborative, and academically rigorous environment where individuals at all experience levels can develop their skills and contribute meaningfully. His long-term goal is to establish sustainable, multi-institutional research and mentorship networks that give aspiring physician-scientists a clear pathway from their first research experience to independent scholarly investigation.
