Biography

Michael R. Deutsch is a third-year medical student and Academic Medicine Scholar at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has conducted evolutionary biomechanics research on primate skeletal muscle architecture. Through gross dissection and muscle digestion into fascicles, he analyzed how scaling of body mass and locomotor modes affect the architecture of forelimb muscles in many primate species. This led to an interest in the musculoskeletal system and orthopedic surgery, particularly hand surgery. He has used a year in the Academic Medicine Scholars Program to research topics such as osteoarthritic subchondral bone changes in non-thumb carpometacarpal joints in human cadaveric hands with micro-computed tomography, trends in domestic hand injuries with tools during labor in the post-COVID era, and factors affecting mortality in patients with hip fractures and polytrauma using the Catholic Health EMR remotely. In his free time, Mike enjoys lifting weights, playing the guitar and singing, and reading about philosophy.
